270 Degrees Shadow Awning – DIY

I was thinking about that project for a long time, finally, I decided to go for it and build it.

The idea was to build a fast opening/closing shadow awning with no supporting.

Finally, that is what I built…

The pivot area is made of 20x20mm steel, 10mm bolts. The pivot supporting plate is made of 4mm steel.

The bolts that hold the awning shade to the roof rack are 8mm.

Top part is 40cm long, lower is 30cm long, height is 10cm.

The idea is to allow the rods to be opened at 270 degrees:

The addition at the back is to avoid movement, these 2 pieces are being set between the roof rack rods.

The rods themselves are made of 15×15 steel profiles. total length (including the pivot area) is ~2m.

The weight of the shadow awning without the fabric and bag is less than 10kg (~8kg to be more precise)

Proof of concept’ just to see it works before sewing and bag fitting:

That is how it looks now, the bag is custom made , current fabric will be replaced with one that will fit better for the shading task.

Here it is on the first real life test 🙂
