Land Rover Discovery 1/Defender Maintenance Schedule

The following maintenance intervals are based on the assumption of a vehicle which works under normal conditions, meaning, if you use your Discovery as a daily driver and cross the Rubicon on weekly basis you may want to adopt a tighter intervals and severe schedule.

Most of the tasks here can be done easily by yourself, some of them might be a little more complicated, but can be done alone after some simple guidance.

Every Week:

  • Check engine oil level
  • Check Automatic transmission oil level
  • Check brakes fluid level
  • Check power steering fluid level
  • Check engine coolant level
  • Check the battery for corrosion
  • Check tires visually for defects and check their pressures.
  • Check coolant hoses for cracks/leaks.
  • Check Auto transmission fluid pipes for leaks

Every 10,000 km or Once a Year (which ever comes first):

  • Change engine’s oil and filter (look at the picture below for their locations)
  • Check the air filter and replace if needed.
  • Inspect brake lines
  • Check the brakes – both pads and discs, replace if necessary.
  • Inspect ball joints and steering components for “play” while turning the steering wheel.
  • Grease cross-shafts/ball joints – if you are using the grease-able type..
  • Check the differential oil level
  • Check the transfer oil level
  • Check the engine accessories belt – replace if needed (dry/cracked)
  • Inspect fuel system

Every 2 years/ 20000 km (which ever comes first):

  • Change Transfer oil
  • Drain and replace the coolant.
  • Replace the brakes fluid (Dot 4 only)
  • Change the differentials oil

Every 5 years / 50000 km (which ever comes first):

  • Change the Automatic transmission oil and filter.
  • Change the timing belt (300tdi), see how to change the timing belt here.

As written earlier, the above maintenance plan is for normal use/wear. If you tow a lot, if your vehicle works hard in the fields/rocks, you may want to change the oil/filters earlier, especially the transmission ones.

Engine oil: Engine oil’s viscosity  depends on the weather conditions, we usually use 10w40. Consult your parts shop for the proper oil.

    • 4.0: 6.1L

Gearbox:

  • R380: 2.4L of ATF Dexron IID
  • Automatic Transmission: 9.1L of ATF Dexron IID

Differentials: 1.7L of 75/90 oil (each)
